What is Pipe Lining?

Today we’re going to be focusing on pipe lining. If a plumber of drain specialist has mentioned this to you and you’re a little confused as to what it is, then our post should be really helpful.

The clever methods used with pipe lining repair your pipes in less time

Pipe lining allows repair of the drain without having to take it out completely. Something like a saturated felt tube will be inserted into the pipe, then inflated where it will be able to ‘cure’ the problem. This means that in effect, there’ll be another brand-new pipe inserted within the older one. This should have a really long-life span so you won’t have to worry about it causing further problems in the near future.

Invasive and effective

This process is quite invasive and there are several steps to go through first. A camera will be sent down first to investigate the problem further. This will be a sophisticated camera with high definition so it can see much better in the murky depth. You will be provided with a copy of the video alongside a report of what the problem is and what the proposed remedy is.

Damaged pipes can cause tremendous problems

As you can imagine, whether you’re a business or a domestic property, leaking, damaged pipes can cause tremendous problems. If you are a business, then you can lose trade as a result, with burst pipes and damage to property. Naturally, this is the last thing you need, you use your pipes every day, so too much downtime in terms of being able to use the toilet, sinks or water fountains is bad news for you and your staff.

When pipe lining is needed it’s usually down to some of the following problems, such as leaks, low water pressure or noisy pipes. This final issue can be down to loose brackets which will explain the noise.

Solutions that work

Pipe lining is a good solution to these types of problems because it’s fast and effective, taking only around a day to do. There’s no digging or excavating needed, and as a result you won’t have to restore the damage to the surrounding area or any buildings, inside or outside, that were compromised while repairs were being carried out. If you’re continually suffering from burst pipes, then it be a sign they need replacing, and by having them repaired using the pipe lining method you could be saving yourself so much time and expense.

Gutter Cleaning Tips

Perhaps you’re doing an external spring clean of your house, and naturally this will include the cleaning of your gutters. It’s an essential task that should be carried out on a regular basis. You may one of those people who only clean their gutters once they recognise a problem. One of these common problems may be flooding of the gutters and an outpouring of water, which is easy to spot.

Gutter problems should only be dealt with once you’ve prepared yourself properly first

If you’ve noticed a problem like this, or you’re aware of something that doesn’t seem right then always stay safe. Before tackling a problem, before investigating it further don’t put your ladder up and climb gaily up to the roof. You need to make sure that the area around you is safe and as secure as possible before starting anything. There are potential hazards you need to be aware of before you climb that ladder.

Your ladder should be reliable and safe to use

In the words of Therese May your ladder needs to be strong and stable. If it’s not strong enough you could have a serious injury from which no gutters will be cleaned for some time. You also need to make sure the ground beneath you is flat, even and firm.

The right clothes

You also need to make sure you’re wearing the appropriate outerwear for the task ahead. You’ll be dealing with all kinds of debris and mulch so it’ll be a filthy job to complete. There may be shards of broken objects and waste, so a pair of strong gloves is a good idea and a pair of overalls. It may be a good idea to consider a pair of goggles or sunglasses just to protect your eyes from flying debris.

The right tools for the job

Having the right tools to hand can make all the difference to getting your gutters repaired correctly the first-time round. You don’t necessarily need complicated tools either. A simple rake can clear leaves away easily as well as other debris you find in your gutter, and any kind of plastic or metal scoop can be used to remove the dirt and debris once you’ve raked it into one place. You can also use a water hose to flush out any remaining dirt and mulch if you have one handy.

How can you avoid this happening again?

In order to prevent a build-up of mulch and debris next time is to use brushes to give your gutter a regular clean, preferably with stainless steel wire bristles. Cleaning products you can get in supermarkets and DIY stores can also be used.

The 5 Drain Busting Benefits of High Pressure Water jetting For Your Drains

Today we’re talking about that all-important job of high pressure water jetting for your sewer lines and drains. Why bother? Well there are significant reasons why it’s a good idea and we’re going to be talking about that today.

Clogged drains are no joke, are they?

If you’ve ever had them then you’ll know what we mean, and they happen to all of us at some point. This can happen when things go down the drain that shouldn’t, either in the kitchen or the bathroom. Not even the hydro jets, sometimes used by plumbers, won’t work if there’s some serious clogging going in the drains, so it’s important to get down and dirty as often as you can with the pressure washing.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

In which case it’s a far better idea to clean your drains using hydro jets rather than using them as a tool to unclog your drains. Hydro-jetting will help give your internal drains a long-term resolution by keeping it clean and clear, thus avoiding clogging of things like soap, fats, grease and detergent, all this builds up overtime, making it almost insurmountable to overcome. Hydro-jet cleaning is brilliant for all the places you’re likely to find a drain where materials pass through it.

Accuracy and Consistency

These are crucial. Make sure you clean your drains regularly using this method. The high-pressure water will go through the sewers spinning water from all sides so the drains are clear, if your pipes are slightly corroded then this is the perfect solution.

High-pressure Water Jetting for powerful remove of residue

Hydro pressure water jetting will do the job thoroughly and you’ll also find that it’s much more efficient than other drain cleaning methods. High pressure water jetting is able to get in deeper so it can flush out rocks, roots and any other obstructions which can clog and get stuck to the pipes.

Yes, if you use high pressure water jetting you’ll get rid of potentially harmful bacteria that over time will settle in the drains and cause problems for you. This will manifest itself in bad smells, and it can be resolved by using the hydro-jet method.

Environmentally-Friendly and It’ll Save You Money

Yes, there’ll be a cost, but by doing it regularly you’ll prevent the likelihood of any need for a call out for drain engineers to come and clear out blockages which have taken root in your drains.

Drain Maintenance Guide

Drains can be forgotten despite their fundamental importance, because they get placed low down in the priority list of household needs. However, a simple maintenance programme can keep your drains in tip top condition, and keep you from having to call specialists out when the problems became insurmountable.

In order to avoid large scale problems due to neglect, we’ve come up with a simple guide to keep your drains healthy, we hope you find it helpful.

Careful what goes down your kitchen sink

Try to be careful about what you allow down the drains. When you’re rinsing out pots and pans before they go in the dishwasher, or before you wash them in the sink, be careful that hard items or liquids aren’t finding their way down the drains as well as the water. Such culprits are anything from fat, hair and coffee grounds, things that can collect over time, and a build-up can stop everything from flowing naturally.

Drain guards provide a simple solution

There’s a simple solution to keeping your kitchen drains unblocked. You can try using a drain guard, it’s a useful utensil that sits on top of your plug and collects debris which you can throw in the bin rather than letting it go down the drain. Rinse your sink carefully and also try putting some chemical solution designed for clearing drains down it every so often, just to keep it clear. Vinegar and baking powder, kitchen items you’re bound to have in the cupboards are also quite useful at clearing out the kitchen drain. Pour them in before applying hot water from the tap.

Hair is the enemy of your bathroom drain

In your bathroom always look out for blocked hair in the bath drain and try using a drain guard here too. This will help collect hair before it has a chance to go down the drain. It’s a useful tool as hair is a real culprit in the bathroom, the main reason for blockages.

Check the water as it drains

Always check to see how well the water is going down the drains in both the kitchen and bathroom, this is a good way of determining how soon you need to use a household chemical solution. If it’s taking a while to go down and you’ve got at least 2 inches of water in the sink left that’s taking ages to drain, then you can pretty much bet your drains are starting to get blocked. Act now and you’ll save yourself some money.

East of Scotland Drainage – for drains that need professional attention

However, if you find your drains are blocked and it’s reached the point of no return, then get in touch with us here at East of Scotland Drainage, experts in drainage and the people you need to call when your drains are blocked. We can make an assessment of the problem and then provide a no-fuss solution. That’s what we do.

Factors Which Affect Cleaning Gutters

Gutter cleaning may seem like the last on a much higher list of priorities. And it’s understandable, we live in a busy, modern world. However, cleaning your gutters is an important part of the garden maintenance for the outside of your property. You need to clean them on a regular basis, but the amount of times you’ll need to clean them, and the intervals you can leave in between, will be determined by different factors. The factors we’re talking about are usually caused by nature and the weather. The inclement weather caused by British winters can leave your gutters worn out and full of debris after enduring wind, rainfall, snow and ice.

Here’s an example of some of the factors which influence how often you would normally have to clean you gutters:

  • The type of roof you currently have
  • The weather, if you’ve had a particularly bad winter your gutters will need cleaning more often
  • Any trees you have around you, if you have quite a few, then it’s likely you’ll get quite a few stray leaves and branches in your gutters
  • Animals and birds often like to make their nests in gutters so keep an eye out for that when you’re doing a quick check of your property
  • Grass – yes grass can find its way into the guttering and cause a blockage. Both grass and plants can grow in your gutters and this type of debris will determine at what time of the year you need to clean them. Leaves – autumn, plants, grass, trees – spring.

If you’re near woodland your gutters will need to be cleaned at the end of each season, especially if you’re property is susceptible to wind.

Trees can be a problem, and the nearer they are the worse it can be for your gutters. They will therefore need a good clean at least every two to three times during the course of a month.

Your type of roof can have an impact on when gutters need cleaning, and slate and silt can sometimes be washed into the gutters. This can then result in plant life growing within them. Rain can cause even more silt so this is something you need to keep an eye out for. Clean your gutters out at the beginning of each spring so you can stop the kind of blockages caused by rain and silt.

Is your roof a complex shape?

This could have its own problems and also determine the frequency of when you need to clean your gutters. If your roof is big enough then more debris in the shape of trees, roots, leaves and plants can make their way into your guttering system and can lead to serious blockages. Another issue may be gutter valleys within your roofing structure which can be problematic.

Drainage Services Terms: Cut Through the Jargon

Drainage services are a niche that only those who work as drainage specialists would know about. The only time you have an interest is when it’s time to have your drains cleared by an expert, someone you’ve called in specially to deal with blocked drains.

He or she may explain to you what the problem is, and although you nod approvingly you may not have a clue what they’re talking about. With this in mind we’ve come up with a few terms and an explanation for what each one means. That way, the next time someone talks to you about the drainage services you’ll be able to understand what they’re talking about and cut through the jargon!

Dye Testing

This is when a colour, non-toxic, is sent down the drain which shows up where a leak in your drainage system is and where it’s coming from.

Drain Rodding

A rod is used to clear a blockage in your drains, there’s usually a cleaning attachment at the end of it for a more effective clearing.

Drain Unblocking

Today’s methods are usually very sophisticated and specialist techniques can be anything from using high pressure water jetting or root cutting which helps unblock the drain and restore it back to its normal state.

Collapsed Drains

If you have one of these then it could have been caused by anything, from tree roots, freezing and then thawing and wear and tear in general which can create extreme damage to your drains which then results in collapse. A collapse of this nature can cause disruption to your drainage system which can then lead to leaks and blockages in your home.

Drain / Manhole Inspections

Sometimes you have to dig deep to see where the problem lies. An inspection can involve using CCTV technology so we can see what exactly is blocking your drains and to give us a clearer picture of what we need to do to clear it.

Drain Cleaning

A good drain clean procedure will help your drains from becoming clogged and by clearing up debris build-up you prevent problems from occurring in the first place. The type of methods we use usually include rodding and drain jetting.

Drain Jetting

This is a method which uses high pressure water jets to remove debris from your drains quickly and efficiently. They’re renowned for getting into areas of the pipes which are normally very hard to access.

Drain Relining

This is good for drains which have been specifically damaged by leaks or root growth. What happens is that a soft lining will be inserted within the pipework where a chemical process will take place to make the inside of your drains hard, durable and functional again.

CCTV Surveys

A camera is inserted deep below to assess the damage to a drain, it can see much further and clearer than manual methods. It’s certainly effective and something that we use here at East of Scotland Drainage Services.

So, there you have it, the next time you have to call a drainage services contractor out and they, or hopefully ‘we,’ explain the procedures needed to overcome the problem, you should have a good idea of the terminology used. Don’t forget, here at East of Scotland Drainage Services, we’re a friendly bunch, so we’re always happy to explain in more detail, if that’s what’s needed. Get in touch and let’s sort your drainage system out.

Which Drainage Services Do You Need?

If your drains aren’t working as they should be and they’re blocked, then it can be a minefield trying to find out what the problem is before you can do anything about it. If you don’t know anything about drains, then where do you start? If you don’t know what the problem is, how can you attempt to solve it?

We’re looking at which type of drainage services you might need when you have a blocked drain, and they are all services which we use here at East of Scotland Drainage Services to solve stubborn problems with pipework.

Blocked drains are a nuisance and they may need different methods to solve them. Once of them is known as high-pressure drain jetting. This is where water is sent down the drain at high pressure and it’s a really powerful way of clearing drains out. This method clears away any blockage material and also helps to break down fatty deposits

Drain rodding involves using drain rods which are joined end to end and then pushed into the drain with special purpose tools on the end to help dislodge a blockage, this can also be a highly effective method. It involves pushing, twisting and pulling at the rods while at the same time flushing the pipes with water.

Another more sophisticated method is CCTV drain surveys, by sending a CCTV camera down the drain, it’s possible to accurately pinpoint what the problem is. Remote-controlled equipment with cameras attached is sent down the drain to ascertain what the blockage is, and once you know what it is, it’s much easier to deal with. This is usually quite useful with more serious blockages.

Tree-root cutting is sometimes beneficial if you have tree roots in your drains, two systems already mentioned above are used to cut the roots, those being water-jets and drain rodding. Dye testing is used when drains have been leaking, as it’s a great way of checking the flow by using a coloured dye. It’s also useful for finding out where an outlet has originated from.

Air testing will check to see if your pipework is watertight enough. Airtight stoppers are used on the pipe ends and then a pump pressurises the air, and a manometer reads and monitors the loss of pressure. Any potential leaks are identified with this method. Drain tracing can help detect a drainage system that’s been underground for some time. Sometimes if you’re having problems with drainage, it turns out there are no adequate system plans. This type of investigation can also be used alongside a CCTV drain survey, this way the problem can be identified and repaired much quicker.

Step-by-Step Guide to Gutter Cleaning

You may think that gutter cleaning is a trivial task easily carried out when you’ve got 5 minutes to spare. However, cleaning your gutters is an important part of your external house maintenance routine.

If left alone for too long, clogged gutters can cause serious problems. A large collection of old leaves, and a mixture of other debris can pull gutters away from the house and seriously damage the roof. If your gutters were to collect too much water for instance, the moisture could cause mould and rot, potentially causing long-term problems to the structural integrity of the house.

What Can You Do to Unblock Your Gutters?

Try gutter cleaning at least twice a year and if you feel too nervous to tackle it yourself due to the height then hire a trustworthy professional. You will need a tall ladder, but make sure you secure it to the ground and that it’s on an even surface.

Protective Clothing is Essential

Make sure you wear protective clothing, mostly for your hands and arms so they are protected from anything sharp. Remove whatever is clogging the gutters with a scoop, shovel or trowel and then use a bucket to contain whatever you remove. Then ideally, you’ll need to use a garden hose to give your gutters a final finishing flush.

Stay Safe When Gutter Cleaning

To stay safe on your ladder it’s advised that you never climb above the very top steps of your ladder. If you’re unsure, ask someone to stand near the ladder to hold as you climb up and for when you climb down. If there’s someone around when you’re carrying out your gutter cleaning, should there be an accident, there’ll be someone around to call an ambulance and carry out any on-the-spot first aid.

East of Scotland Drainage – Quality Gutter Cleaning

You could stay away from gutter cleaning yourself and call in a professional to do it. Here at East of Scotland we have a trained team of specialists who are experts in gutter cleaning. We can send someone round to make an initial assessment and then carry out the cleaning work on your behalf. At least this way you can have your gutters cleaned thoroughly and safely, avoiding the potential of an accident and avoid damage to the structure of your house.

Get in touch and we can send someone out at a time convenient to you. Here at East of Scotland Drainage, we offer a professional, friendly service and we’re always on hand to help with any queries you may have. We look forward to hearing from you!

Gutter Cleaning – Why is it Important?

Here at East of Scotland Drainage Services we pride ourselves on the comprehensive range of service we offer our customers. Gutter Cleaning is a regular service we’re asked about and we feel it’s an important part of helping to maintain any industrial or commercial building.

Comprehensive Gutter Cleaning Service

We can be called in to carry out a gutter repair as part of a regular annual cleaning service, or as an emergency repair when the system isn’t working, we have a professional team who are all trained to carry this out.

We have technology which is state-of-the-art, so our gutter cleaning is always completely thorough, and it comes with surveying and flood testing. But the question is, why should you consider gutter cleaning as part of your external building care?

Blocked Gutters Can Cause Leakages That Lead to Other Problems

If you have a blocked and damaged gutter and you do nothing about it, then you will find that potentially there’s going to be worse problems to deal with later. There could be major issues caused by cracks and/or leaks where the water is diverted. When this happens, your premises can become water logged and water absorption can damage the structure. Accumulation of excess water is a sure sign of trouble leading to other issues which could cost a fortune to repair.

Another issue caused by water accumulation because of blocked gutters are pests such as rats, mice and insects. This is because the damp caused by excess water rots wood as well as affecting the brickwork, and this provides a perfect breeding ground for pests.

Saving Money

In the long term, you’ll save money by having a regular gutter cleaning service, we usually recommend you have it done bi-annually or annually. By doing this as a preventative method, you’ll save yourself money and the hassle of having to have different parts of your building repaired.

East of Scotland Drainage Services – For Well-Maintained Gutters

Don’t get caught out, don’t leave yourself with damaged, poorly maintained gutters which could go on to cause you even worse problems that would require expensive remedial work. Get in touch today, give us a call or drop us an email.

5 Tips to Avoid Blockages

1 Pull Hairs Out the Plug Hole Regularly

Always make sure you pull hairs out of the plug hole each time you use the bathroom. You can also use a plugged screen to prevent anything getting caught in the drain. By emptying the plug hole each time you use it, you avoid the eventual drain blockage that occurs when you have a build-up of hair.

2 Things You Should NEVER Flush Down the Toilet

There are certain things you should never flush down a toilet unless you want it to be blocked. Nappies, hand and face wipes, cotton of any kind, and sanitary towels should never be flushed down the toilet. Stick to toilet paper and you won’t be dealing with any blockages in your loo.

3 What are You Pouring Down the Sink?

Don’t pour oil, grease or any large bits of leftover food down the sink drain, this will guarantee a blockage at some point. Throwaway any leftover food into the dedicated recycling bin. Fat can be mixed with hot water and washing up liquid before pouring down the drain, but never neat as it is. Grease and fat can easily block up the drains quickly, it’s one of the biggest culprits, so be aware.

4 Wash Your Toilet and Sink With Hot Water Regularly.

This helps get rid of any potential build ups so your drains are clear. You’ll also find that it’ll help to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Cleaning drains and plugholes, means you avoid some of the nasty health and safety hazards that could make your family ill.

5 Clean Your Drains Regularly

Clean the drains with natural ingredients such as vinegar and baking soda, before finally washing away with hot water. Leave your bathroom/kitchen plugholes for around 15 minutes before using again.

Fixing a Blocked Toilet

A working toilet is something you don’t think about as it sits there in the background waiting for you to pay it a visit. You probably don’t really give it that much thought. However, once it stops working, you certainly notice its presence.

Having a blocked toilet is a highly unpleasant experience, if you want to avoid embarrassing situations with your toilet not working when you have guests, then it pays to be able fix it yourself, or have the phone number of a reputable drainage expert or plumber to hand.

Keep Tools Handy For Blockages

Keep some tools handy for when the toilet does break down, such as rubber gloves and a plunger. Whatever you do, don’t flush the blocked toilet, you could fill the bowl with water and end up with dirty water and waste on the floor, which could ruin floors and carpets.

Once you’ve put on your glasses and gloves, you can put your hand into toilet and feel around for what may be blocking the toilet. You can gently try and loosen whatever it is that’s there so you can free the blockage yourself.

Use Your Plunger

If you’re going to use the plunger, place it at the bottom of the bowl and move it up and down to loosen the blockage. Once you’ve been successful and dislodged whatever is blocking the toilet, pull it out and place it in your garbage bag and naturally, take it straight out of the house and dispose of it appropriately.

Your Toilet Should Be Back to Normal

It goes without saying that you should test the toilet afterwards to see if it is now working properly. It should be back to normal and you should be able to flush it as before. Although it sounds like a ghastly job, it is quite simple, and once you’ve done it, it’ll be another job you're confident to undertake in the home, like bleeding a radiator.

Qualified and Trained Engineers For a Superior Service

If you have a blockage and it won’t go away, then you may be in need of expert drainage services. One of our engineers can come in and take a look at your blocked toilet and repair it for you. It’s better than leaving it and hoping it’ll rectify itself – it won’t. Most blockages will be easy to deal with by yourself, but there might sometimes be something that needs a professional engineer to look at. If you think you might need our services, just get in touch and one of our expert team will be happy to help you.

Blocked Drains: Prevention

Drains serve a function, and its one which you’d rather not think about. Drains are something that operate in the background, you know they get rid of stuff but that’s all you need to know. However, taking an active interest in your drains doesn’t mean you have to become an expert, it can mean taking enough interest to stop them from becoming blocked drains.

Keep an Eye Out For Blocked Drains

If you have blocked drains you’re left with two choices, you either try to unblock them yourself or you call in a firm of drain specialists to do it for you. If you do monitor your drains regularly you may be able to fix it yourself, or even if you do have to hire someone, it’ll be easy enough to fix if you’ve been vigilant. More serious leaks could involve overflows, and damage to electrics.

Blocked Drains – Inside and Outside

Blocked drains outside occur because of leaves and tree roots, which can then block the flow of water. Blocked drains inside can also become blocked due sanitary products and other items which shouldn’t be flushed and end up clogging up pipes and drains. There can also be a build-up of tissue, wipes and hair, especially from showers and baths.

Blocked Drains Caused by Flushing Things Down the Toilet

You’ll find that a lot of blocked drains are caused by people trying to flush things down the loo. And it’s not just the bathroom that causes the blockages either, and it’s not always solid items that clog up the drains.

Blocked Drains in the Bathroom

Of course the bathroom is a common place for blocked drains to occur as occupiers attempt to flush things down the toilet or pour things down the sink. Items that go down the toilet are nappies, paper towels, and sanitary items.

Blocked Drains in the Kitchen

The kitchen is a classic area for blocked drains to occur. Non-solid items are things such as oil or grease which will harden after they’ve hit the pipes, creating a block. Paint and paint thinners can also blockages making them hard to drain water aftewards.

Elsewhere old clothing, plaster and cement, plastic bags, cat litter, cotton wool buds, quite unbelievably find their way down a drain and cause a blockage.

Check Before You Dispose of Used Items

Read the instructions on the packaging if you’re not sure how to dispose of the item or its packaging once it’s fulfilled its use. It’ll tell you quite clearly what you can and cannot put down the toilet or sink.

CCTV Drain Surveys: Important For Homeowners

You may be moving into new property and there’s two things you need to do, no it’s not to do with moving furniture in or decorating, it’s drain surveys. This may be last on your list of priorities, but you should carry out CCTV Drain Surveys on both your new property – and your old one. In this post, we’re going to explain why.

What kind of state are the drains in at your new property?

Having a drain survey done is probably the last thing you’d think of but, thinking in the long-term it could save you time and money. You don’t know what state the previous owners have left the drains in and it could be blocked. So rather than have a nasty surprise a few days or weeks after moving in, why not make sure you have the drains examined thoroughly with a CCTV drain survey.

Our Drainage Engineers are Properly Trained and Qualified

Here at East Scotland Drainage we send a drainage engineer round who will use the latest CCTV equipment to inspect the drain, a camera will be inserted so the engineer can find any problems and following this, you’ll get a survey report detailing the problems, if there are any.

Drains Can Get Blocked by All Sorts of Objects

Drains can get blocked by all sorts of things, such as tree roots, fat and grease build-up, fractured pipes and failed joints. It’s best to get this cleared so you can have clear drains, which are much healthier and safer for you and your family.

Carry Out a CCTV Drain Survey at Your Old Property Too

Also think about having a CCTV drain survey of your old property and this will help you to leave less in the way of problems for the new owners when they move in to your old house. A full report of your drains following an inspection will help act as proof to the new owners that everything is working and ready to move in to.

Add a CCTV Drain Survey to Your Moving Home To-Do List

If you’re in the process of moving house and you have a list of things you need to do, then don’t forget the CCTV drain survey, add it to the list and don’t wake up to any surprises in your new home. If you have any questions regarding what we’ve discussed today, then get in touch with us here at ES Drainage services, we’ll be happy to help you and answer all your questions.

CCTV Drain Surveys: The Benefits

Rather than examine a drain manually and risk carrying out an ineffective examination, a better alternative is using a CCTV. CCTV drain surveys really are the most effective way of diagnosing problems in your drains. The CCTV will use remote control to penetrate the murky depth, and a specialist drain expert will be able to diagnose exactly what’s wrong with your drains.

Blocked Drains Can Lead to Further Problems

Blocked drains are no fun and it’s important that the problem is diagnosed so that the problems can be solved as soon as possible, because all sorts of other issues can develop if it’s left untreated. It’s important to therefore restore the flow of waste through the pipes before you end up with an unhealthy blockage causing potential health issues.

We Use CCTV Drain Surveys and Know How Effective It Is

We use this method ourselves so we know how effective it is. Using a method such as this means we can determine the problem that much quicker and do something about it. One of our plumbers will use the camera to manoeuvres its way through the pipes and see what’s causing the problems. It’s quicker and more efficient and it will save you time and money in the long run.

CCTV Drain Surveys are Better Than Traditional Methods

In the past more traditional methods were used, and this often led to more expensive treatment of the problem as it often required more than one visit to establish what the problem was. Also, ineffective solutions would often be tried in an effort to sort the problem out before realising it wasn’t helping.

Keeping Disruption to a Minimum

Not only are CCTV drain surveys more cost effective as well as being speedier, they also keep disruption to a minimum. This means the plumber can use the camera to identify any issues, identify what needs to be done and then do something about it quickly. There’ll be no need for a large excavation of the area either, so there’ll be no mess to clear after.

If you’re a new property owner, then you might want to invest in a CCTV drain survey before you move in. A quick visit to the property using this type of technology could help diagnose and sort a problem out before it gets any worse. And it would cut down costs and give you less to worry about when you’re already in the process of moving house, which can be stressful enough on its own!

What are the Benefits of Summer Drain Cleaning?

Drains are something we can easily forget about, after all they’re hardly worth thinking about – right? Until of course, there’s a problem, you find a blockage, and suddenly you can’t drain anything away. Don’t neglect your drains, this is the worst thing you could do. It will only lead to trouble later. What you don’t want is this scenario – having to have your drains repaired in the middle of the cold weather during the winter. What’s better, is to monitor and have drain cleaning carried out in summer so as to avoid a rupture or clogging.

Blocked Drains Can Create a Serious Health Hazard

When the weather is at its warmest, check your drains, and it may be a good idea to bring in a reliable plumber to clean out your drains and carry out any possible repairs. Debris can build up in your drain over time which can cause damage, because as water is left standing, the pipes rust and can even burst. As you can imagine, it can also become a serious health hazard, what with all the harmful bacteria that can build up.

Rather than letting it lie as it is, with the risk of it getting worse, it’s best to get someone to look at them now. Think also of the bill, if your drains are so blocked they need some serious work carrying out, then you’re going to be paying more. Winter weather is going to make the job all that much harder and may result in you being charged more, as the job takes longer. It’s definitely worth thinking about.

The Benefits of Drain Inspection in Summer

The benefits of having your drains cleaned during the summer months is that it is much easier to access your drains, and using specialist plumbing equipment is much easier to operate in warm weather. It can help flush waste away and help your pipes to function better, so by the time winter arrives, all that debris has been cleared, and your drains will be clean and clear throughout the cold freezing months.

Professional Drain Cleaning

If you’d like to have your drains cleaned over the summer months, then contact us at East of Scotland Drainage Services, our professionally trained team will be more than happy to help. We have many years’ experience in this area and we can send one of our qualified team members to take a look at your drains, before we decide what to do.

Once we’ve had a thorough look, we’ll tell you what needs to be done and then carry out any repairs and clearing that needs doing. That way, once the winter is well underway and we’re having freezing weather with frost and ice, your drains will be clear enough to deal with whatever’s thrown at them, and have a far better chance of surviving until spring.

What is Drain Re-Lining?

What is drain relining and why should you care? Well, everyone who has drains, because they're cost-effective and provide a really great alternative to drain repairs, and at some point, if we have drains, they'll need repairing. If you want to save money, then drain relining is a no-brainer.

If you've suffered with blocked drains in the past, or it's a problem you're currently battling with, then you'll understand how inconvenient this can be for you and your family. Drain relining stops this from happening long-term by helping your drain pipes allow fluids through quicker because of the smooth well fitting resin lining we attach to your drain pipes.

If you like the idea of free flowing drains for the next few years with no problems, then pay close attention, because we're going to be going over the advantages of drain lining with you today.

What's behind the method of drain relining?

A professional drainage service will carry out drain relining. This is a process where a resin flexible liner is pushed through a drain, and an air bag is pushed through to help mould the resin to the drain pipe. The flexible liner is heated, and once it's cooled it will mould to the shape of the pipe. The air bag is removed and the pipe will now have smooth new lining.

What are the benefits of having drain relining?

  • All types of pipe material can be considered for drain relining

  • It can run up to 600 metres of continuous lining

  • It can work successfully with bends and joints

  • Flow rates are increased after being lined

  • It can successfully prevent tree root infestation

  • ES Drainage drain relining is covered by comprehensive guarantees.

Before drain relining starts all of the pipework is washed out with a high pressure water jet to clean out any debris before anything is started. A camera will mark out the location of adjoining pipes to the main after which the correct length is marked out, depending on the pipe. Of course different types of lining can be used which means it's an extremely versatile method.

How to Deal With Blocked Drains

If you're not great with DIY, then you may not be entirely sure how to deal with a blocked drain. We're hoping our post on dealing with blocked drains will give you some clues as to what to do.

There'll be certain clues to look out for when you have a blocked drain, perhaps water isn't draining away properly in either the upstairs or downstairs sinks, or perhaps in the toilet. How can you unblock the offending drain?

Don't Run Water Down the Blocked Drains

The first thing to do is to try not to drain water down the sink. It could make the problem worse than it already is. You need to make sure that if you are going to be dealing with the blockage yourself, that you're wearing goggles, gloves, and perhaps some overalls if you have them handy. You'll also have to wash your clothing after you've finished unblocking your drains.

Drain Rods, Plunger Attachments and Unblocking the Drain

You'll need something that's known as a drain rod which can you easily get from a DIY store, or you can hire them. Once you've got your drain rods and your protective clothing, lift the cover of the drain, it may have a handle, or a string or wire to pull it up. You can then use your rod with a plunger attachment which may take several minutes while you twist and turn it in order to dislodge whatever is blocking your drain. It's a good idea to then flush the drain with water so that any remaining debris is also removed.

Monitor the Condition of Your Drains

It's sensible to monitor your drains on a regular basis in order to prevent any further blockages. Also try to remember what it is your disposing of when you use your sinks, especially in the kitchen. You should also watch out for plants and flowers, and avoid anything leafy near the drains, sometimes leaves and plant matter can find its way down the drain, so keep an eye out for that. A drain guard is one good way of keeping your drain free of plant debris.

Rinse Anything Before it Goes in the Dishwasher

If you have a dishwasher, then its a good idea if you keep an eye on what you put in there before switching it on. Make sure you rinse all plates and all your cutlery before you put them in the dishwasher, because any excess waste could end up blocking your drains.

East of Scotland Drainage Services

If you have blocked drains and you don't feel confident in dealing with them yourself, then get in touch with us here at ES Drainage Services. We deal with all kinds of drainage issues including blockages, small or large.

How Does Drain Jetting Work?

Today we're going to be talking about drain jetting and how it can transform the state of your drains, whether you're a business or a domestic property. Drain jetting is a great way of cleaning drains and pipes that doesn't require a complete immersion within the drains themselves. All that is required is a clever device that cleans the drains thoroughly.

How Does Drain Jetting Work?

Basically it's about the clever use of pressurised water, which is forced through a nozzle at the end of a really long hose. The hose will be inserted into a pipe or drain and it gives the drains a really powerful clean. The nozzle has cleverly had its holes drilled at an angle, so its all the more powerful when it works. This also helps it to propel water through the nozzle at a high pressure, and by doing this, the inside of your pipes are getting a really good clean. To make all this come together, you'll need a powerful pump and some protective equipment, which will help to keep you safe from harm while you're using it.

Because so much rubbish ends up in a drain, whether it's via the toilet or the sink, in a domestic home or a commercial property, drains can get pretty blocked. That's why it's important to have these effective specialised methods to solve the problem, or it can get so bad, your drains are in need of something more serious.

Do it Yourself or Hire a Professional

With drain jetting, you're either going to do it yourself, or hire someone else to do it for you. If you're confident using the machinery, or you've had some experience using it before, then by all means try doing it yourself. Make sure you go to a reputable hire firm and make sure that as well as getting the equipment, you make sure you have all the right protective clothing too.

Otherwise, you can hire a professional, and that's where we come in. Here at ES Drainage we have a lot of experience using the drain jetting method, so we're ideal as a first point of call if you find this method is to your liking.

What are the Advantages of Drain Jetting?

It can be more cost effective than more traditional methods of clearing the drains and pipes manually, and perhaps having to dig up the pipe work. You'll also find that it's much better for the environment, as opposed to using chemicals. Chemical cleaners aren't good for the environment or for your drains, as it can damage your pipes and destroy bacteria that's necessary to help septic systems maintain themselves.

Regular Drain Jetting

It's a good idea to use high pressure water jetting on your drains and pipes on a regular basis, we would suggest at least twice a year. Here at ES Drainage Services, we offer this type of regular cleaning for clients, domestic or commercial. Get in touch with us here at ES Drainage Services if you have any further questions on drain jetting, or you'd like to arrange high pressure water jetting for your property's drains.

Why is Gutter Cleaning Important?

Gutter cleaning is an important part of household maintenance, if you don't keep them clean on a regular basis you're looking at bigger problems in the long-term. We're looking at water logging, and water absorption which can cause damage to the structure of your property. The water that collects around the foundations of your house or commercial property will then seep in and weaken the structure, and this is bad news.

Keep an Eye on Your Gutters

While you're busy with your day to day business, the gutters are probably the last thing on your mind- until something goes wrong. They sit in the background doing whatever it is they do and you don't really have that much of an interest. However you should be interested, because if you don't take proper care of them they can cause you and your home a lot of problems! It's regular constant care and attention that helps avoid serious issues later.

You gutters have an important job, and that is to make sure rainwater comes off your roof and goes down the drain. You can easily imagine what happens when they're ineffective. And it's not just structural damage, it could cause serious health issues too.

Your Gutters Could Be Damaged and/or Blocked

It's always a good idea to call a professional drainage team to carry out gutter cleaning. They will also be able to advise you on how to take care of your gutters throughout the year when they're not around. Things like clearing away debris which can lead to blockages, or repairing the seams of your gutters. Make sure you have a ladder to hand for your drainage experts and they'll also need gloves and a hose, perhaps some wire and garbage bags so they can dispose of the waste.

Blockages, Repair, Gutter Cleaning

If they find a blockage then they'll naturally clear away the debris that caused it. There could also be a blockage in your downpipe, which is a bit more tricky, but what they can do is make a hole to release the blockage. Then the drainage team can use a hose to see if the water is now running freely. They'll then fill in the hole and any cracks there may be in the rest of the piping. If the drainage team have taken away part of the pipe in order to replace it with a new section, you can use this opportunity to clean out the drain and wash away any dirt.

Have Your Gutters Checked Every Year

It's a good idea if you have gutter cleaning carried out on an annual basis, usually before the winter months set in and after the leaves have fallen in autumn. This should give your gutters a fighting chance against the cruel weather of winter and help them to stay free from blockages. It's going to be really hard to repair your gutters once the winter is here, as you or a drainage team will be fighting against poor weather.

You can also install a gutter guard and this will help protect your gutters and from debris from nearby trees. It will help keep larger bits of debris from getting in, although it's still a good idea to clean your gutters every year.

Flood Prevention For Drains

Whether you're a business or a domestic user, your drains are important, and you never realise how important until they stop working. We've had torrential rain of late and perhaps because of this, you are now more aware of drains and how they work than you were before.

In this post we're going to be discussing flood prevention from blocked drains. This is important as it's about prevention rather than a cure. You don't want to be in the position of having to repair your drains because of drainage issues, you want to be in the position of being prepared and being able to prevent a disaster.

Flooded blocked drains don't just happen, there are signs that you can look out for such as water draining slowly from the bath, sink or shower, there could be a build up of debris which is preventing a normal flow of water.

Check Your Drains and Try Using a Strainer

Check your drains regularly and you'll be able to see whether there is a danger of blocked drains. You can also try using a simple strainer on the drain holes so nothing will block the drains leading to a blockage somewhere down the line. It's simple yet effective and you can scoop out any larger items that could have gone drown the drain and blocked it.

Clean Your Drains Out Regularly

A regular drain clean is useful too, you can try buying unblock products, and there are some great products out there.
