What Does Drain Tracing Involve?

If you don’t know what drain tracing involves we’ll be exploring the subject in this post, so read on to find out whether drain tracing might be something you need for your drains.

Does the water that travels through your drains go somewhere else but you’re not sure where?

Sometimes wastewater from either commercial or residential drains doesn’t run to where it should, and this means it could be travelling towards reservoirs and lakes. This isn’t good news as it could result in pollution of waterways and this is something we want to avoid.

Drain tracing is one of the services we offer here at East of Scotland Drainage Services.

If you suspect this may be happening due to a blockage then one of the ways you can find out if your water is being inadvertently re-routed somewhere is to call us out. We can carry out what’s known as drain tracing and this helps us to follow the route your water is taking.

So what is drain tracing?

A coloured liquid that follows the path the water takes through the pipework system. There’s a variety of different colours used and it can be really effective in tracing water pathways. From this we can trace its journey and map it, usually from any source.

Once we have this important information, such as where the problems lies and what’s causing the water to travel in one particular direction, we can pretty much solve it. This is usually by carrying out repairs, possible relining the pipes - or by simply replacing them.

If there are broken pipes which need to be repaired or replaced then the dye tracing system is pretty accurate in determining where the damage is. You could also try using CCTV drain surveys as well. If there’s a hairline crack or break in the drainpipes a relining or repair of the area can be done the same day, leading to a correct water flow in no time.

Pollutants and polluted waterways.

We’ve already mentioned the potential for pollution of the natural waterways when you have a flow of water travelling the wrong way, but it can also to identify any pollutants that may be entering your water system too. Don’t be apprehensive of this modern and successful solution because the dyes we use don’t harm the natural environment, they are non-toxic and don’t stain - they’re used only to help avoid pollution not cause it.

The complexity of underground drains are hard to understand without more sophisticated solutions.

Regardless of what kind of blockage or damaged pipes you may have, it goes without saying that underground drains are complex beasts to understand and can be difficult to reach. However, drain tracing dye really helps to identify the issues that may be too hard for any other sort of tracking device or human intervention to access.
