Step-by-Step Guide to Gutter Cleaning

You may think that gutter cleaning is a trivial task easily carried out when you’ve got 5 minutes to spare. However, cleaning your gutters is an important part of your external house maintenance routine.

If left alone for too long, clogged gutters can cause serious problems. A large collection of old leaves, and a mixture of other debris can pull gutters away from the house and seriously damage the roof. If your gutters were to collect too much water for instance, the moisture could cause mould and rot, potentially causing long-term problems to the structural integrity of the house.

What Can You Do to Unblock Your Gutters?

Try gutter cleaning at least twice a year and if you feel too nervous to tackle it yourself due to the height then hire a trustworthy professional. You will need a tall ladder, but make sure you secure it to the ground and that it’s on an even surface.

Protective Clothing is Essential

Make sure you wear protective clothing, mostly for your hands and arms so they are protected from anything sharp. Remove whatever is clogging the gutters with a scoop, shovel or trowel and then use a bucket to contain whatever you remove. Then ideally, you’ll need to use a garden hose to give your gutters a final finishing flush.

Stay Safe When Gutter Cleaning

To stay safe on your ladder it’s advised that you never climb above the very top steps of your ladder. If you’re unsure, ask someone to stand near the ladder to hold as you climb up and for when you climb down. If there’s someone around when you’re carrying out your gutter cleaning, should there be an accident, there’ll be someone around to call an ambulance and carry out any on-the-spot first aid.
