Keeping Your Drains Working in Autumn

The nights start to draw in now and the views over parks and rural areas get prettier by the day, with multi-coloured leaves falling to the ground slowly, and the trees with their gorgeous plumage standing proud in the autumn haze. The temperatures plummet and we’ll be spending our autumn wrapped up indoors with a mug of coffee and a chunky sweater. However, outside your drains will be suffering as a result of Autumn’s leaf shedding as the leaves fall. They will inevitably land in your drains, eventually clogging them up.

We’ve also got the added dimension of wind and rain. The drains will become a victim of the vagaries of autumn, winter weather and it is, without doubt, the best time to be vigilant with regards to your drains. Blockages don’t have to be an issue if you keep an eye on them starting in the first place.

Simple maintenance and making observations.

You can carry out some simple maintenance in the run-up to and during autumn by donning a pair of gardening gloves and going around your property making some observations. This can include removing any leaves from drains and guttering and placing drain covers over any open ones. This will help avoid blocking the inside of any drains or guttering, helping to prevent something more serious somewhere down the line.

Drains guards can get broken over the course of a year - so check them.

If you already have drain guards, check them to make sure they’ve not been damaged over the past year, there’s no point in having them if they’re unable to provide the coverage you need. Also, if the water is not allowed to drain effectively as a result of the broken or non-existent drain covers, this could lead to water being too close to the brickwork of your property and causing damp to your internal walls.

Prevention is better than cure.

By making sure you have drain guards, and that you are clearing out your drains as you find any leaves, you are keeping your drains free from potential blockages. It’s inevitable that with the transfer of debris, leaves, twigs, branches, and anything else that blows in with the weather, that your drains may have some problems. However, there is something you can do.
