Spring Cleaning Your Drains

Now is the time to get your drains in top shape for the coming warmer months. Effective drain maintenance mean a healthy family without the hazards a dirty, blocked drain can cause. Read on to find out how you can spring clean your drains and keep them in excellent condition.

Once a Year Drain Maintenance

By cleaning your drains properly at least once a year, you’ll have a home that’s clean and free from bacteria and germs that dirty, blocked drains contain. It’s only natural that when you’re in charge of that eventual home spring clean, drains are the last thing on your mind. However, they are an important part of the cleaning process.

Clean Drains

By making sure your drains are clean, you’re making sure that prevention is better than cure, and that you avoid a blocked drain. You’ll be pleased to know there’s nothing too hard about cleaning out your drains, it’s short and sweet and relatively inexpensive. Problems usually start if you’ve not done anything about your drains and they’ve been left to gather harmful germs and bacteria.

Kitchen Drain Maintenance

In your kitchen, one way of avoiding drain blockages is to place a strainer over the drains. That way no leftover food will escape and you can remove it quickly and easily, with water able to run smoothly through the strainer. While you’ll get food stuck in your kitchen sink drain, it’s usually hair that gets stuck in your bathroom or shower plug hole. A strainer for each then is a really great idea and that way you can catch hair and debris in your bathroom drains and food in your kitchen.

Go Non-Chemical

Try using non-chemical cleaners if you’re going to use something to flush down the drain that will remove stubborn debris from within. If you use something too strong it could damage the delicate lining of your pipes. Use something like baking soda mixed with vinegar. Pour the mixture down the drains and this should really help unclog anything stubborn lying beneath. The fizzing sound you hear is perfectly normal, it’s the combination of vinegar and soda working their magic. Both together will help remove any grease and oils by breaking them down.

Bathroom Drain Maintenance

A plunger should be a regular part of your bathroom cleaning routine to keep your drains clear from blockages. Hair may seem a pretty innocent item, but if too much collects within the drain over time then it can cause a blockage that will prevent water from going down through the drain and into the pipes. You’ll have inches of water around you every time you take a shower, or your bath will take ages to drain.
