Choosing the Right Drainage Contractor

If you have drainage issues and you’re worried about what you’re going to do next, you’ll probably decide on hiring a professional drainage contractor at some point. It’s here that things gets tricky, because there are lots of trustworthy contractors out there, it’s just a question of finding the right one for you.

The problem is there’s a lot of poor drainage out there, and sometimes it’s down to badly constructed drains in the first place, which is often down to a contractor’s workmanship. So it’s important that the one you choose to work on your drains is someone you know you can trust to do the job well. We have some tips that will help you to find the right contractor.

Your Options

Firstly, we’d suggest finding as many options as you can and then narrowing them down to around 3 or 4. You can find drainage contractors via industry bodies, which include the Association of Drainage Authorities (ADA) or the National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC). On the other hand you could simply seek out word-of-mouth referrals from people who’ve used contractors and were happy with the work.

Ask the right questions

Talk to the few contractors you’ve narrowed down, see how they work. What are their response times, especially to an emergency, and are they members of associations or industry bodies? If you’ve gone down this route to start with, to find your contractor, you’ll already know the answer to that question. Look at their portfolio for testimonials and try and assess whether or not you could work with them, do they make you feel comfortable, or the exact opposite?

What are they really saying?

When you’re talking to them, try to take note of how they answer and whether they’re reluctant to answer some of your questions. You don’t have to turn into a Scotland Yard detective for this, but you should look out for any readiness and openness to answer questions, specifically when it comes to how they work and how seriously they take their business.

Look out for transparency and honesty

They should be transparent about what they’re charging for so look out for this in their quotations. They should offer a breakdown of exactly what’s included in the service. They should also offer different ways of paying for the work using established payment accounts. Never give them cash, especially if they ask for all of it upfront. They should also offer you receipts for proof of payment.
